Doing Things Right When No One’s Watching

That’s what separates those who want to appear  and those who want to be.  You can’t think about others when you’re doing things,  you think about what you’re creating, and you think about doing it right.  Art is self-expression, what you want to tell the world,  or maybe externalize for yourself what you’re conceiving,  but…

That’s what separates those who want to appear

and those who want to be.

You can’t think about others when you’re doing things,

you think about what you’re creating, and you think about doing it right.

Art is self-expression, what you want to tell the world,

or maybe externalize for yourself what you’re conceiving,

but didn’t even have so clear before.

Art, in its purest form, is authentic expression.

Even if that art made “well,”

with care, were to remain secret, never shared,

it would still show in that person’s actions.

That “invisible” work is never wasted.

Those who are used to doing things right when no one’s watching

get rewarded by life and you’ll notice it in them,

in the things that, instead, can be seen.

But the contemporary art market is another beast.

Million-dollar works for provocations nobody understands.

Hype, brands, connections.

The young artists doing that authentic work,

invisible, deep,

stay in the shadows.

The public dismisses it all as “weird,”

without understanding that behind those “ridiculous” works

there’s often a power that truly deserves to be seen.

But maybe that’s exactly the point:

Doing things right when others don’t see is even more precious today.

It’s a compass to not get lost in the jungle of appearances.

The irony is that those who truly make art
often don’t even know they’re making it.
They just live.

Maybe that’s why real art

always scares people a little.

Art is wild.

It forces you to look inside yourself, to express

without the bridles of “politically correct,” “socially correct.”

And truly few have the courage for that.

Better to do it right even when no one’s watching.

Everything else is just talk.
